Green beans and an All-American pressure canner

You probably already know this by looking at my blog, but I love preserving things. I am basically self-taught and have learned along the way by using books, websites, and Facebook groups.

I wrote this blog post about How to Get Started with Food Preservation and it outlines start to finish the various types of food preservation and supplies needed for each. So, for now, I’m not going to summarize them on this page as well, but refer you over to that blog post.

Just know that having the right equipment in the kitchen is essential. Don’t let the list overwhelm you if you are just starting out. Pick a simple project to start with (I recommend applesauce or blueberry jam) and go from there. As you expand your horizons into new recipes and methods, you can add to your appliance and accessory collection as needed. I did my first canning project about 12 years ago, and just in the past few years got my All-American 21.5-Quart Pressure Canner and Excalibur 9-Tray Food Dehydrator. So, you don’t have to do it all at once!

If you read some of my blog posts, it’s likely you might see me talk about the importance of having the right tools in the kitchen for the job. I’m not one to need every single appliance and gadget that’s out there, however, there are definitely some tools that make life in the kitchen a lot easier!

Over the past few years, we have been trying really hard to eliminate chemicals and toxins from our home, eat more naturally, and live more sustainably. It’s a continual process, and we aren’t perfect. But, anything that any of us does is something, and that’s an important start!

My husband is the gardener in our family, but I help too! We focus on organic gardening, and we try to grow more than we need so we can share with friends and neighbors. We built an “Extras” stand in our front yard a few years ago, and as we have some garden extras we put them out there for anyone to take as they walk by. Once in a while, people will leave a dollar or two, and one time someone put some of THEIR tomatoes in OUR stand. It’s a fun addition to our yard.

Here on this page, I’m sharing a few of the tools and supplies we use. Due to the popularity of gardening, most products you need can be bought at your local hardware store. Shopping local is important, so I don’t have a ton of links to share here on this page.

Using safe health and beauty products on our skin and in our homes is really important to me, and I’m sharing some of my favorites with you here on this page. As we think about using safer products in our bathroom and our home in general, there are a few things I want to point out:

    1. A product made with some natural ingredients isn’t necessary chemical-free.
    2. Natural does not mean non-toxic.
    3. Natural ingredients can still cause allergic reactions in some people.
    4. Essential oils aren’t safe if they aren’t formulated and used properly.

I also want to note that the ingredients listed below may not be perfect. As with everything in the journey to a more natural and sustainable life, I am always learning new things. As I learn more about certain ingredients and products, I may adjust what I am using and sharing with you. All any of us can do is the best we can with the information we have. That being said, if I have anything listed that you have confirmed is NOT a natural or healthy option, please do let me know.
