As someone with extremely sensitive skin, I’m always checking ingredients and looking for unscented, natural products that won’t make me flare up like a tomato. I’ve been an avid supporter of small-batch soapmakers for many years, more often than not buying plain (and wonderful) unscented bars.
I Took a Soapmaking Class
I met Shanna with Big Red Barn Goat Milk Soap at a local craft show in September 2022, chatted with her about the toils of sensitive skin, and happily left with a bag of goodies. I came home and looked her up on Facebook (put those business cards in those bags, craft show people!) … and found out that she offers soapmaking classes!
As someone who loves learning new things and often talks about how anyone else can also learn, I didn’t hesitate before signing up. As soon as I made my first batch of unscented goat’s milk soap, I was hooked.
Then I Joined a Soapmaking Membership
But wait … then I learned she also had a monthly membership, where she sends out the scents, colors, and recipe you need for each super cool monthly project, PLUS teaches you how to make it via a live Zoom class? Of course, I just had to join that, too. The monthly package and guidance from Shanna are really cool, but what I love even more is the community of other still-learning soapmakers. Sharing our projects and supporting each other has just been so much fun.
In the beginning, I had no intention of making soap to sell. I was happy making it for us and to share with clients, family, and friends. But, I quickly realized I was making more soap than what we needed, and WANTED to make more. Plus, people I had gifted soap to started asking me how they could buy more. So, I opened the Preserving My Sanity shop in September 2023 where I offer a variety of goat’s milk soap, lotion bars, lip and body butter, bath salts, accessories, and gifts.
You can see a fun recap of several of the first soaps I made as a Sassy Soapers member in this Instagram Reel.
You Can Learn How to Make Soap, Too!
Shanna hosts a free “Soapmaking Week” event once or twice a year, and after that the Sassy Soapers membership is open to new members to join. If you are interested in joining us, you can learn more and join her waitlist!

Just wanted to post a short note to say the soaps you make are so great. They are hard and super sudsy and smell great, and leave my skin feeling soft and clean.
Thanks so much Nancy! I’m glad you are enjoying your soap!
