Hi! I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about Preserving My Sanity, and how I navigated the process of naming my blog in 2018.
My First Blog
I initially started my blog in 2009, and called it “Darcy on the Coast: Thoughts and Reflections.” It started as an outlet for me to do a bit of writing in my spare time, and I shared it with friends and family members who cared to read it.
At the time, I lived in Wilmington, North Carolina – just a 10-minute drive from Wrightsville Beach. My husband and I spent lots of time at the beach and exploring the Intracoastal Waterway in our Carolina skiff.
Moving to Minnesota
In 2014, we relocated to southwest Minnesota. As I continued to write blog posts here and there, I knew that I needed a name change. I couldn’t very sensibly be “Darcy on the Coast” from the middle of rural Minnesota. At the beginning of 2018 when I was setting my yearly goals, one was to not only get my blog renamed but to also expand it by writing more regularly and promoting it on social media.
Renaming My Blog
Coming up with a new name was much harder than I expected! I had lots of great ideas, but the most important thing to do when you have any business name idea is to make sure someone else didn’t already think of it.
During my blog renaming process, I came up with several ideas that I thought were genius – only to do searches on Google and GoDaddy to find them already taken.
The Brainstorming Process
I started a flowchart of sorts on a plain piece of white paper, and I just started writing down words. It is included at the bottom of this page so you can see the process. I knew the things I wanted to write about included food preservation, cooking & baking, pets, chickens, gardening, crocheting, random inspiration, family, the outdoors, etc. I love color and am a happy and optimistic person.
With my blog, I wanted to be able to reflect all of that its name. Yet, I also wanted to have a name that was broad enough to expand into whatever else I wanted to write about in my blog posts.
I Got It!
I carried that dang piece of paper with me for several months. Every day I looked at it, added words to it, wrote potential name ideas down, and then crossed through them after finding them unavailable. One day, I finally put together the words, “Preserving My Sanity.” I checked it – it was available! I said it to myself for a week or so, and I liked it. I liked it.
The Double Meaning
“Preserving” in a literal sense covers the food preservation and gardening aspects of our life that I plan to carry into my blog to share with you all. “My Sanity” alludes to those hobbies being something I enjoy, something that gives me purpose and makes me happy. When put together, “Preserving My Sanity” encompasses any of the things that I enjoy doing. It doesn’t HAVE to just be about food preservation. I can write about making jam, my dogs, going camping for the weekend, what I made for dinner last night, or anything else. All of it is “Preserving My Sanity” because it all makes me happy, and I enjoy all of it.
I hope you enjoy it, as well! Thanks for being here with me.
